For many classic car enthusiasts, the first-generation, two-seater Ford Thunderbirds are the ones that fly the highest. Known as the “baby birds”, the 1955-1957 Thunderbirds were Ford’s answer to the early Corvette. The 1956, which came standard with a “Continental kit” (outside-mounted spare tire), is a favorite thanks to that one-year-only feature (the ’57 got a bigger trunk and the spare went back inside). That year also marked the debut of the porthole for the hardtop roof as well as the addition of the optional 312 cubic-inch V8. Here we have a beautiful 1956 Thunderbird that ticks all the boxes –condition, color and options. As this car has the 312 V8 with the 3-speed stick, it adds a fair amount of performance to its luxury cruiser credentials. This incredible car received a meticulous, frame-off restoration that took place from 2003-2006. Since then, the car has been driven sparingly and always properly maintained and stored. The restoration was performed by Gary Scott, whose restorations are known to be of the highest quality, with many taking First Place in class as well as prestigious “Best in Show” awards. Even the radio was sent out and rebuilt at a cost approaching $600. A large 3-ring binder, packed full of receipts, provides detailed proof of the “no-expense-spared” approach taken to this restoration. Finished in Raven Black, the body of this ‘bird looks amazing and is in pristine condition. Wire wheel covers and wide whitewall tires provide the perfect accent while that Continental kit and the factory dual exhaust outlets integrated into the rear bumper add to the massive presence of this classic Thunderbird. Inside, the black and white upholstery is a classy combination, while the factory “engine-turned” metal finish on the dash and door panels harkens back to a time when style was king. This car features the four-way power seat, as seen on the driver’s door, and as with the exterior, the interior looks showroom fresh. As the powertrain, suspension and brakes were also refurbished during this nut-and-bolt restoration, the T-bird is a smooth and spirited performer. Whether it’s hitting a Cars and Coffee on a Sunday morning or heading out for a weekend road trip, this Thunderbird is ready to thrill classic car enthusiasts and its owner alike.
