Introduced later in the 1962 model year, the Spyder version of Chevrolet’s Corvair Monza took the already sporty version of this compact car with the rear-mounted, air-cooled engine to a whole ‘nother level. Fitted with a turbocharger, the Spyder’s flat six, with a spirited 150 horsepower, boasted nearly 50 percent more power than the standard engine. The steering wheel and the rear deck lid proudly proclaimed “turbo charged”. Other features of the Spyder included a 4-speed manual gearbox, a 3:55 rear axle, heavy-duty suspension and brakes and full instruments that included a manifold pressure gauge. The Spyder package was available for the Monza coupe and convertible. Here we have a rare treat indeed, a 1962 Corvair Monza Spyder convertible that is in incredible condition. Finished in classic white with a black convertible top and stunning red interior, this Monza Spyder certainly has the looks to go with its personality. According to documents in the car’s file, the Corvair, which was in Hawaii at the time, had a meticulous, ground-up restoration in the early 2000s and in 2005 made its way to Florida. In 2009 the car was bought by another Florida resident and the car won many awards at car shows, including a prestigious 1st place National Senior Award with the AACA. As expected of a car of this caliber, the Monza Spyder boasts an arrow straight, clean and rock-solid body and underside. During the restoration, correct OEM parts were sourced from Hemmings Auto News and no area of the Monza escaped the closest scrutiny and care. The end result is as if you stepped back in time to a Chevrolet dealership to check out the latest cool rides when Kennedy was President and the Beatles had yet to appear in the U.S. In addition to the gleaming exterior, the interior impresses with its beautiful design and condition. Look closely and you’ll see the steering wheel has no cracks in its rim and the original Delco AM radio still resides in the dash. Despite its compact dimensions, this sporty drop top can carry five adults comfortably, all the better to share the enjoyment of top-down cruising on a nice sunny day. Fortified with that turbocharger, the flat six is peppy and sounds great. The steering and brakes operate smoothly and of course running through the gears never gets old. Overall, this Monza Spyder is a blast to drive. Please call Carroll Street Auto at (603) 627-5595 to schedule time to view this classic close up.
