An original 427 Shelby Cobra is an amazing car. Light, very powerful and very elemental with just two seats, no windows and no A/C, a vintage 427 Cobra is a massive thrill ride. It’s also a million-dollar car. That gave rise to Cobra replica companies that provide the timeless design and ripping performance of the legendary original at a fraction of the price. Here we have a 1966 Cobra replica by Classic Roadsters. The car features a sharp, vibrant Red with White stripes paint scheme that looks fantastic. It also features a flip-open gas cap and side exhaust. Note that we will be replacing the current wheel/tire set with a set of new Halibrand-style wheels wearing blackwall tires -- a handsome combination which is more in keeping with how these Cobras looked when new. Having been owned by just one meticulous enthusiast for the last 35 years, this Cobra has been very well cared for. Slide into the cockpit and you’ll note the old school style bucket seats, a thick-rimmed sport steering wheel and full instruments. The car also features added floor insulation (help keep the powertrain’s heat out of the cockpit), a black convertible top, side “curtains” with Lexan sliding windows and a cockpit cover. You’ll also see a few things you likely don’t expect – air conditioning (ice cold) and an automatic transmission. The latter is controlled by a B&M ratchet shifter that allows a choice of shift-for-yourself or fully automatic modes. There’s also a Kenwood AM/FM/CD audio system. Under the hood is a 1969-vintage Ford “FE” 428 V8 that was rebuilt to stock specs some 15 years ago, with minimal miles added since then. That mighty mill sends the power to the rear wheels through a stout C6 automatic transmission. Other chassis highlights include independent front suspension, a solid rear axle with coil-over suspension, front disc brakes, front/rear sway bars and power rack-and-pinion steering. The best way to describe this amusement park ride on wheels is to say it’s like driving a very powerful go-kart. Along with its ripping acceleration and nimble handling is a throaty exhaust that provides the right soundtrack. Providing most (if not all) of the enjoyment of piloting a real 427 Cobra at about 1/25th of the price, this car defines “bang for the buck” like few others.
