Along with the Camaro's 1967 debut, Chevrolet set its sights on competing in the SCCA Trans-Am series. To meet the engine size limit of 305 cubic inches, a new, high-performance 302 cubic-inch V8 was created. The high-revving small-clock featured forged pistons, an 11:1 compression ratio, a high-lift cam and an 800-cfm Holley carburetor. Conservatively rated at 290 horsepower, the 302's actual output was likely in excess of 350 horses. This new “Z/28” performance package also included firmer suspension calibrations, front disc brakes, quick-ratio steering and larger (15- versus 14-inch) wheels. For 1968 Chevrolet proudly put “Z/28” emblems on its track-focused Camaro, unlike the first-year version that had no tell-tale badges. Here we have a 1968 Camaro Z/28 that we sold years ago and just reacquired that presents in its original color of Ash Gold with Black stripes. The body still boasts its original, rock-solid panels and underside and has driver-quality paint along with brilliant chrome bumpers and trim. The 15-inch Rally wheels with BF Goodrich Radial T/As round out the Z's handsome looks. The interior is impressive from the headliner down to the carpeting, with the dash, door panels and upholstery all in very nice condition. This car features the optional rally instruments (including the Z/28-specific 6,000 rpm redline tach) and center console, as well as the simulated wood rim sport steering wheel. A former owner added an aftermarket A/C system. Under the hood there is now a mildly-built 350 V8 matched to the original 4-speed manual gearbox that sends the power to the original 3.73-geared Positraction rear end. Note that the car's sale includes a 1968 "MO" code, 302 V8 short block that was built within two weeks of this car's production date. Cylinder heads are available, and the intake manifold is included, though other components, such as the carburetor, are not. Out on the road this Camaro is a blast to drive; it pulls strong through the gears and sounds awesome doing so. It also handles and brakes well thanks to the Z/28's firmer suspension and power front disc brakes. New paint...top off hood and fenders and lower valance, including new black stripes.
