Introduced for 1967 along with its similar Camaro cousin, the Pontiac Firebird had plenty of unique features to set itself apart. A bold chrome grille/bumper unit along with GTO-style taillights provided pizzazz while under the hood you could have anything from an OHC straight six to a robust 400-cube V8. For 1968, the Firebird’s styling was subtly refined but the big news was the replacement of the 326 with the 350 V8 and the addition of even more potent HO and Ram Air versions of the 400 V8. Here we have a real-deal 1968 Pontiac Firebird 400 HO. With just 2,087 of these produced in ‘68, these are very rare ‘birds. This car still boasts its original, numbers-matching powertrain and has had a sympathetic restoration. A very high-quality respray in the correct Verdoro Green looks amazing. Look closely and you’ll see arrow straight body panels and even gaps as well as a solid underside and trunk. The factory twin-scooped “400” hood along with the factory Rally II wheels wearing OEM-style Firestone redlines finish off the Firebird’s impressive head-turning factor. Inside, the optional “Custom” interior looks showroom fresh and is a nice complement to the exterior hue. Everything is as the factory issued apart from an aftermarket wood-rimmed steering wheel and an old-school AM/FM/Cassette audio system. This loaded Firebird came with optional A/C which has been removed, however the components are in a box and go with the car. The Firebird’s original 400 HO V8 fires right up and runs strong. The original 3-speed automatic shifts smoothly while power steering and brakes add to the enjoyment of wheeling this classic car around. Lean into it and that High Output 400 steps out, accompanied by an appropriately thrilling sound from the dual exhausts. Overall, the Firebird runs and handles very well. This extremely rare example of a first-generation Firebird fitted with the highly desirable 400 HO engine also comes with plenty of paperwork, such as the owner’s manual, various receipts, a reproduction of the window sticker and PHS documentation.
