1969 Chevrolet Chevelle

For many muscle car enthusiasts, the 1968-69 Chevelle SS 396 has it all. The shark nose front end profile, the bulging rear quarters and upswept rear quarter windows all give the muscle-bound vibe, while those massive valve covers under the hood back up the Chevelle’s powerful presence. Offered here is a fantastic example of a 1969 Chevelle SS 396. The back story indicates this car has had only a few owners. The first owner defaulted on the loan, so the car was repossessed with just a few thousand miles on it. The second owner bought the car in 1970 after returning from Viet Nam and owned it until 1982, when he sold it to his cousin, the third and latest owner who drove the car from Nebraska to NH. This SS still wears its original and rock-solid body panels as well as its original numbers-matching engine. In the mid-1990s the car was given a sympathetic restoration, resulting in a beautiful, turn-key SS 396. The car has only been driven about 4,000 miles since and has always been properly stored and kept out of inclement weather. The SS was originally Lemans Blue and was repainted in the same eye-catching hue, the glass is all original as are the rubber seals, that along with the frame, floor pans and trunk are further testament to the excellent care the car has received since new. The bumpers were re-chromed and the Chevelle wears a set of 14-inch American Racing 5-spoke wheels wearing Cooper radials. The underside was given a full detail while the suspension and brakes were refurbished. That painstaking detail involved pulling the engine as well. Inside, rather than the typical black color, the SS features a dark blue interior that nicely complements the exterior color. The front seats were reupholstered, and the headliner was replaced but otherwise, the interior is from 1969. Also rather unique is the optional bucket seats without the optional console. As such, the 4-speed stick sprouts out of the carpet, lending a more serious street bruiser vibe. The old AM radio was recently replaced with a modern unit that looks old-school while having modern features such as Bluetooth capability along with 300 watts of power and upgraded speakers. Note that the knobs are missing and replacements are on order. Under the hood is the original 396 that was rated at 325 horsepower. The engine was freshened up with a .030 overbore and a 350-horse cam was installed to bump up the power. A factory-style chambered exhaust with resonators and correct tips provides a proper muscle car soundtrack. The Muncie M20 4-speed received a new clutch and all that power goes back to a 12-bolt, 3:55-geared Positraction rear end. Power steering and power front disc brakes add to the easy driving character. The cherry on this muscle car sundae is that only about 4,000 miles have been added since the engine/suspension/brake rebuilds. As expected, the SS runs and drives fantastic.
