For many muscle car enthusiasts, the 1970 Chevelle SS checks all the boxes. The subtly bulging fenders and hood, semi-fastback roofline and simple but handsome grille and taillights just look so right. The optional “cowl induction” hood scoop added more muscular personality. And with no less than 350 horsepower coming standard for the SS 396 with the option of even more, these Chevelles made the right sounds and responded swiftly to a right foot. Here we have a 1970 Chevelle SS 396 that turns heads as easily as it presses them back into the seats. The original rock-solid body panels are arrow straight and sport a very high-quality respray in Cranberry Red that’s properly accented with black SS stripes and 15-inch sport wheels wrapped with BF Goodrich Radial T/As. The bumpers and other chrome (and stainless steel) components are similarly brilliant. The optional bucket seats and console (complete with staple shifter) and air conditioning (converted to R134) highlight the interior features. From the headliner down to the carpet this original interior looks great apart from some wrinkling of the rear roof side trim. A few upgrades include a three-spoke sport steering wheel as well as a tachometer and trio of additional gauges residing under the dash. An aftermarket audio system features an in-dash-mounted Chevy-branded AM/FM/Cassette head unit along with a trunk-mounted CD changer and power amplifier. Raise the factory cowl-induction hood and you’ll see the original, numbers-matching 396 V8. Upgrades include an Edelbrock aluminum intake, headers and an MSD electronic ignition. Those headers combine with a free-flowing dual exhaust system (with factory chrome tips) to provide a proper rocking soundtrack. All that power runs through a TH400 automatic transmission and out to the 12 bolt Positraction rear end. Along with the thrilling performance provided by that powerhouse, the Chevelle shifts smoothly and, thanks to power steering and power front disc brakes, handles and brakes very well.
