With a sharp redesign for 1968, Chevrolet's "Chevy II" Nova took on more of a mini muscle car look with its kicked-up rear quarter panels and overall beefier stance. Of course, the tough looks could be backed up with V8 power ranging from 307 to 396 cubic inches. Little wonder that this generation, produced from 1968 through 1972, is a favorite among muscle car enthusiasts. On offer here is the top dog – a “real deal” 1970 Nova SS 396 that’s one of the nicest examples we’ve ever seen. With just 36,132 original and very well-maintained miles it’s in amazing condition. The underside is so clean we’d eat lasagna off it. The beautiful, arrow-straight body has had a single high-quality respray in the original Desert Sand color. You’ll see on the window sticker copy that the Nova was originally optioned with a white painted top; it now has a black vinyl top to match the interior. Like the exterior, the Nova’s interior appears showroom fresh. It was properly optioned too, with the bucket seats, console and full instrumentation. Although it was originally saddle in color, a previous owner had it changed over to black to match the black vinyl top he had installed. While some may wonder why the interior color change on such a nice, low-mileage example, evidently his goal was to get the finest, genuine SS 396 Nova he could find and if need be make any changes to the colors to suit his preference (Desert Sand with black top and interior). We don’t think we’d find much argument against the beautiful result. Under the SS’ hood is the original, all-numbers-matching “L34” 396 V8 rated at 350 hp, and it’s matched to the original 4-speed stick to boost the fun factor big time. That Muncie M20 gearbox sends the power to the stout, 3.31-geared, 12-bolt Positraction rear end. Power front disc brakes and power steering add to the enjoyment of piloting this potent Nova. Given the original body panels, original powertrain and even original spiral shocks and rear drum brake linings, this is one amazing, low-mileage example of a muscle car icon. Two binders full of documentation that include copies of the original bill of sale, Protect-O-Plate and window sticker, accompany the car. From front to back and top to bottom this rare, 1970 Nova SS 396 must be seen to be believed.
