Description

** MORE PHOTOS TO COME ** Available for the 1970-1972 model year Corvettes, the “LT-1” engine option was a thriller in Chevrolet’s sports car. With its spirited performance, the high-winding 350 cubic-inch powerhouse drew rave reviews from the car magazines of the day. Fortified with a solid-lifter, aggressive spec camshaft, this engine really came alive (and sounded incredible) at higher rpm. As the LT-1 option cost nearly $500, it was considerably more expensive than the LS-5 454 option (at around $300). As such, an LT-1 C3 is a somewhat rare sight. Coming from a private, five car collection of the best and most desirable early C3s, this 1971 Corvette LT-1 roadster has less than 37,000 original miles and must be seen. This virtually all-original Corvette still wears its lustrous “War Bonnet Yellow” paint and original black soft top. As you’d expect of a car that has won NCRS “Top Flight” awards, this is a fantastic example that will stand up to the closest scrutiny from a knowledgeable Corvette enthusiast looking for a top grade C3 LT-1. Factory records reveal that, in addition to the desirable LT-1 small block/4-speed powertrain, this sharp C3 was equipped with a black vinyl auxiliary hardtop, white-lettered tires, power steering and brakes, an alarm system and an AM/FM radio. The Corvette comes with a 3-ring binder detailing the car’s comprehensive documentation which includes an NCRS scoring sheet, the tank sticker, inspection sheet, Protect-O-Plate and owner’s manual. The nearly all original paint (records show a minor respray was done to the front end, perhaps due to stone chips) still looks fantastic, as do the bumpers, grille and other bright trim. The pristine Rally wheels are fitted with correct Goodyear “wide tread” tires, completing the “just as the factory made it” presence. Note that the original wheels and tires from 1971 go with the car as well. The underside is so nice it’s what we call a lasagna car, meaning it’s so clean we’d gladly eat pasta off the floor pans and frame rails. Inside it’s just as nice, with the original black vinyl seats, door panels, dash and carpet all in impressive shape. The instruments are crystal clear and all work fine except the temperamental clock (typical of most old cars). The factory-issued console plaque proudly proclaims the high-output specs of this king of the 350s: 330 horsepower and 360 lbs-feet of torque. Raise the hood and you’ll see why the detailed engine compartment impressed the NCRS judges. We’ve always liked the LT-1’s chrome air cleaner and finned valve covers declaring this small block’s big status. Those eager horses run through the original 4-speed transmission and on to the 3.70-geared Positraction rear end. Suspension and brakes are up to the same high standard as the powertrain, and as such this Corvette drives, handles and brakes very well.
