Produced from 1971 through 1973, the “big body” Mustangs offered style in spades along with luxury and performance and a choice of three body styles – coupe, Sports roof (fastback) and convertible. Here we have a 1972 Mustang convertible that checks a lot of “car guy” boxes. It looks to be a nicely maintained, mostly original example that's had one high-quality repaint some time ago. It’s packing a 351 V8 rather than the more typically seen and less potent 302. It has a manual transmission (a rare 3-speed). And it’s a well-equipped looker with its optional “Ivy Glow” paint, chrome Magnum 500 wheels and the factory Décor option (included color-keyed front bumper, a front spoiler and Argent lower body side two-tone paint). Other options include power steering, power front disc brakes, racing mirrors and “Competition” suspension. The extensive documentation includes the original window sticker as well as a Marti report. Having been so well cared for and rust-proofed when new (you can see the yellow plugs when you open the doors), this Mustang drop top presents as a very nice driver-quality car. The correct Ivy Glow repaint still "glows". Although close inspection will reveal a few flaws, overall it looks great for an older refinish. The white convertible top features a glass rear window (rather than plastic which tends to get yellowed, scuffed and creased). The 15-inch chrome Magnums fitted with BF Goodrich Radial T/As completes the classic look. Inside, the original knitted vinyl upholstery looks and feels great and everything else, from the inside of the convertible top down to the carpet also presents very well. Full instruments grace the dash and center stack and there is an AM/FM 8-track unit that looks like a period-correct aftermarket unit. Under the scooped hood, the 351 2-barrel V8 starts and runs smoothly and eagerly. Lean into it as you run up through the gears and there’s plenty of performance on tap here. Braking and handling performance are likewise impressive; even driving over bumps and ruts the Mustang feels like a car one-tenth its age. Whether you’re cruising to the beach, taking the kids for an ice cream with the top down or just kicking back at a Cars and Coffee, this handsome Mustang convertible promises a lot of fun for its next owner.
