1979 Chevrolet Corvette

Although they don’t typically have the rip-roaring performance of their earlier siblings, the later (1975-1982) third-generation Corvettes (“C3s”) have become very popular. Combining the C3’s iconic styling with a rumbling V8, the open-air thrill of the T-top roof and a much lower price than earlier C3s, these Corvettes offer a lot of bang for the buck. Here we have a 1979 Corvette that deserves a closer look from anyone wanting a sharp, enjoyable and very affordable ‘vette. This car sports a number of upgrades (such as a high-performance cam) that substantially increase the engine’s output as well as the fun factor. Wearing a nice driver quality respray in its original color of Black and fitted with the factory optional alloy wheels with Firestone Firehawk tires, this Corvette certainly has the looks to go with its personality. The interior has been completely and correctly restored and looks brand new from top to bottom -- no worn, sun bleached or torn leather or carpeting here. The Red is a great complement to the Black exterior and the lone deviation from stock is a vintage Jensen AM/FM/Cassette sound system. This C3 is loaded with options too; highlights include A/C, power windows/door locks and a tilt/telescopic steering wheel. The original “L48” 350 cubic-inch (5.7-liter) V8 still resides under the long hood and it runs through the original 4-speed manual transmission. Thanks to over $4,000 worth of performance upgrades (see photo of engine shop receipt) and a new exhaust system, there’s plenty of power here along with a proper throaty soundtrack. Chrome valve covers and a flat black “Edelbrock” air cleaner add an old-school look to the engine bay. Overall, this Corvette runs and drives very well, with slick shifting from the 4-speed gearbox and solid stopping power provided by upgraded brakes with red calipers and cross-drilled rotors. Having said all that, the Corvette still needs a bit of work – specifically the rear end is making noises we don’t like and as our mechanic already has a full schedule, we’ve decided to sell it as is. This also makes for a bargain price for this sharp Corvette in which all the “heavy lifting” has already been done. Another perk of this Corvette is the manual transmission. As most of these C3s tend to be automatics, the 4-speed stick is a rare treat that adds a ton of fun to wheeling this classic Corvette around.
